The Guide to the Attic Vents Function. The physical principles on which they work.

The "physical Principles" on which Attic Vents Function and the grates, inlets, outlets, turbines, fixed louvered units and the air passages needed.

Why Attic Vents?

In Winter, the purpose of adding ATTIC VENTS is to keep the heat inside of homes and buildings and to keep the cold outside. Also to avoid frost buildup in the attics in winter.

In summer, the attic vents function is to keep the cool inside the home and for the ridge vents to suck the heat out of the attic.

BEFORE the availability of "modern Insulations", attics where sealed as much as possible and there was no air circulation into and out of attics.

This section describes the Attic Vents Function, the need to install them in modern buildings, the means by wich attic inlets and outlets permit proper air circulation in the Attics and dissipate heat accumulation and or humidity.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Lets study together "the principles hidden behind the Ventilation of Attics".

B - The Principle of VENTILATION of Attics for SLOPED ROOFS is the same as for FLAT ROOFS in an other section on this site.

C - The ABSOLUTE "MUST" of proper ventilation of attics by grates and VENTS.

D - Their Cannot be only INLET Vents or OUTLET Vents, independent of their numbers.

Lets study the principles:

E - Major Principle: Water cannot come in and go out by the same end of a hose! Follow me in this funny way to present it!

F - Principle almost the same with ONE Exception further down for Attic Vents.

G - Principle: Gravity of COLD air and Gravity for Hot air.

H - Principle: Cold air goes down and the most Important happening in our favor: Hot Air RISES!

I - 20 years ago, it was the in thing to add a electric roof fan to the Sloped Roofs. Result: Certainly No Energy Saving with THAT! After all, one does not need an Electric Fan to evacuate the SMOKE from the chimney of a Fireplace?

J - The SAME for the proper venting of sloped roofs.

K - There is A NEED for a lower inlet at the Soffit (Like a fire place) that is the cold air intake from outside air.

and the;

L - "RIDGE Vent" at the highest part of the sloped roofs.

M - Principle: The higher a chimney is, the more POWER-FULL the DRAFT of raising air will be.

The SAME for "the VERTICAL DISTANCE" between the Soffit cold air Inlets grates at the bottom of the sloped roof edges and the Ridge Attic Vents.

N - Principle: Shut off the tap on the hose, no water comes out.Shut off the damper of the fireplace, smoke stays in the room.No air inlets grates at the soffit, no air going in the attic and air going out at the ridge vents.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Yes! there will be tons of photos of Sloped Roofs ventilation and flat roofs ventilation and the ventilation of attics for both shortly.

In the meantime, do not forget to open the damper!

See you shortly!

--------------------------------------------------------------

Ops! Yes, okay! The Exception above was forgotten.

We will come back to it. It is about VACUM that can be created, and the major lost of inside warm air and the influx of cold air with correspondent energy costs that can amount to more than a thousand dollars a winter!

See you shortly!

In Conclusion

The most important part of this section is: Is there a slot cut out hidden behind an aluminum-perforated soffit?

It is something to check in our own home using a wire or a tool with a fine point.

If there are bubbles of tar protruding from the crushed stones on a flat roof, there are great chances that there is not any slot behind the perforated metal soffit.

What is to be done is explained during a building inspection.

An e-book will be available in the future. Keep checking. Return to Home Page from Attic Vents Funtion.
